Shamanism, the Ancestral Religion of the Turks

Human beings have had the desire to explore nature since the day they came into being. The desire to explore nature and integrate with it gave rise to shamanism. Today, we're diving into shamanism which is a belief system that is as old as human history. Initially, let's start this journey by delving into the depths of shamanism.


What is shamanism?

It is thought that the word shamanism comes from the word shaman. There is a view that the origin of this word is based on the Tungus language. The word Shaman is used as kam in Turkish. There are many recipes related to shamanism. For example, Zeki Velidi Togan thinks that Shamanism is a nature religion. Shamans are people who find strength by getting help from Gods and natural events. Some people think that shamanism is a system that helps establish connections between God and spirits in the natural world. Although there are different thoughts and opinions about Shamanism, the view that it is a religion for the Turkish people is common.

Who is a shaman?

Who is a shaman? What does he do? Is he a magician? Is he a fortune teller? Many questions such as these arise in people's minds. The general view about shamans is that they are people who can connect with spirits and cure diseases by using various rituals. Some views also state that shamans are not doctors or magicians. They think that shamans seek to gain social status.

Who can become a Shaman?

What is a shaman? What is shamanism? We learned. Now let's look at who can be a shaman. The most well-known condition for becoming a Shaman is to come from a Shaman lineage. People who have a shaman in their family have a better chance of becoming a shaman because this knowledge and power is taught to them. Shamans may receive a "calling" of some kind. This call usually manifests itself in the form of visions, dreams, or a significant change in their life. This call sets them on the path to becoming a shaman. Although innate abilities provide an advantage in becoming a shaman, competence and knowledge are developed over time through the training process. Shamans are prepared for this mystical journey with their deep connection to nature, strong instincts and desire to learn.
